I've set myself a standard expected of me to preced though I often deviate from it.
Why do I?

According to MacMullen in his book
Why Do We Do What We Do, it is due to the motivation in which either compeled or impinged. Thus, contributing to the respective outcomes of the aforementioned question: either fulfilling or not those said standards.
